Dear Mae,
Frank & I love your FOUR BOYS, TWO CANOES AND THE GUADALUPE RIVER!!!!! What an adventure! What impressive young men and amazing men they are now. What a tragic loss with Mark passing so young.

Mae, you and Jerry were truly outstanding parents. I actually finished the book not too long after our last correspondence. I swear for several nights I was going down the Guadalupe in my dreams. Frank finished last night & has been recalling all of his young river adventures. I hope everyone who lives near a river will read it...I hope everyone who does not live close to a river will read it too and learn about the beauty of one of our greatest natural resources.

We are looking forward to giving your book to Seth when he is a little older.
love,
joy!

I have finished reading FOUR BOYS, etc. and really enjoyed it. I will save it for the grandsons who are just beginning to read.  I am proud for your successes and feel they are richly deserved.  You have worked hard, done a nice job, and thus found success and deep sense of satisfaction.  Your family must be very proud of you.  Thanks for giving me some insights into your family as well as that of other Comfort folks. Sincerely

Shirley Barnett

What a story!  There are adults who would talk about it but never attempt this adventure. I grabbed the book at 3:30 a.m. and finished at 6:30 a.m. I laughed, I cried, and at times I was a complete nervous wreck...  And Bill, the maps are so informative. I "traveled with them in my comfortable bed.”  Pam said that you write with a smile and at times she heard Vera (Mark's mother) laugh.  Keep up your excellent work...Joyce Flach, Comfort, Texas

Mae,

Just finished your book, and I wanted to tell you what a delight it was to read. I moved to Comfort in 1972 and knew your sons James and Roger - my mother Joyce gave me the book for Christmas when I was home to visit. You may even remember my late father, Jerry Bailey - for a short while we lived around the corner from you in Comfort! I also seem to remember you being librarian - but that may have been after my time.. . my Dad and I moved to Boerne for my senior year, 1978.

In any case, I very much enjoyed the book - it brought back memories of my own (much less ambitious!) adventures on the Guadalupe.  I look forward to reading your other books, as they sound very interesting. In particular, I've always wanted to know more about the story behind the "True to the Union" monument, so I hope to be ordering "Son of Defiance" from you soon.

Hello, I am Brandon Fox, from Kerrville, Texas.  oday I received your book, Two Boys, Two canoes, and The Guadalupe River for my birthday.  I just finished it. It’s an awesome book, and I would love to do this adventure as well. My buddy Kyle and I have kayaked the Guadalupe and fished it a lot, and I believe we can do it.  Please contact me back.

Thank you,
