GENESIS IMMERSED IN CULTURE OF EARLY TEXAS GERMANS

Sweet butter, strong stone buildings and the Texas Germans who made them both forms a loose link between two books about mid-19th century Texas.  Fiction, Genesis follows young Emil Schellhase after the Civil War…-- Reese Vaughn, Books at the Crossroads, Victoria Advocate, Victoria, Tx…

[Vaughn’s review connects the Genesis book with A Journey Through Texas or a Saddle-Trip on the Southwestern Frontier by Frederick Law Olmsted.]

Those two books on Comfort (Son of Defiance and Genesis) reminded us of visiting The Civil war battlefields upon our journey to your place in Houston...  Coincidentally we went to a thearter play, called The Red Star Line.  This play is based on the vast immigration of Europeans to the USA during 1899 - 1906.  The Red Star Line sailed from Antwerp to New York packed with people that saw no future in Europe, sold everything they had to pay for the trip to the new Land in which they hoped to make a better life.  Several did but, as always, some were not that fortunate. We knew about this period but with reading the two books and seeing the play it all came back very clear.  Would you please tell Mrs. Durden-Nelson that we enjoyed reading her novels, which clearly required a lot of research and imagination. Lovely fall greetings from the two of us--Stan and Hilde DeLuycker from Kontich, Belgium

Thank you so much for the Genesis-Beginning Again book. I am a fan of any book relating to Central Texas or to the Germans in Texas…     In your last  two books, I have been introduced to new subjects -- the Union group massacred on the Nueces, and now the Freethinkers.  I had no idea that either situation had occurred.  I really enjoy reading your style of writing… -- Deann Woodland,  Austin, Texas

I read an article regarding the recent fire that destroyed the historic Ingenhuett Store in Comfort.  Then it occurred to me! That was the store you mentioned several times in your Son of Defiance book! -- and also the Genesis book! -- and that was the Gregory J. Krauter of Inguenhuett Store, the man who wrote the Foreword for Son Of Defiance!  The loss of such an old building containing many historical items always leaves an empty feeling in me…   So sorry for the existing owners of the store… -- Deann Woodland, Austin, Texas

it was a highlight event meeting the two of you… an inspiration… and you show that it can be a whole lot of fun growing “older”! Continue channeling all that creativity into your books… -- Joan Hinze, Teacher, Gifted Talented Program, Brenham, Texas

Really enjoyed your books (Son of Defiance and Genesis) and my dad (who is 91) also enoyed them… -- Susan Long, Administrative Assistant; Turner, Collie & Braden; Austin, Texas

we rented GLORY from Blockbuster and now -- glad I ordered (Son of Defiance and Genesis) one for Jeannie and one for myself to read… -- Sandy Folts, San Antonio, Texas
